The weather turned bad reasonably quickly which meant that the night in the underground motel (Whitecliffs) and Camerons Corner would have to wait another year. We changed direction and went through Bourke followed by Windorah where we were rained in for a few days and the Birdsville Bash refugees were passing through. One truck threw up so many stones that the Landcruiser has stone chips on the paint and a cracked windscreen. With the change of caravan for this year Nick and Audrey were in their swags for the first – they worked well from the start to the finish including the wet weather.

When we dried out we headed up towards Winton and stopped overnight just outside Lark Quarry. We did the tour then headed into Winton for a couple of nights including doing the Age of Dinosaurs museum. Our stay was at the showground and there is a rat plague out there – the swaggers were told to make sure they kept everything zipped up – and all was good….

From Winton to Richmond to see the Kronosaurus – the most complete fossil of its type in the world and made a little more unusual because it was a sea based animal, and apparently most of their bones don’t become fossils. From there to the Hughendon dinosaurs, then to see Muttaburra for the last of the dinosaurs and a walk through the museum and the old preserved hospital.

Into Longreach where the girls took in the tour at the Stockmans Hall of Fame while Nick and I wandered the displays themselves. Audrey loved the show, particularly patting the dogs and horses. The next day Nick and I toured the Qantas museum and did the Jumbo Jet wing walk.

From Longreach the kids wanted to go swimming, so across to Hervey Bay for a few days before heading towards Brisbane where they were jumping on a plane to get home to Canberra! We stayed behind and now have about 4 or so weeks before we need to be home.
